About PCS Spiritual Life Student Outreach

A challenge we face at Peoria Christian School is to produce young people who are thinking about a world beyond themselves.  This kind of young person is uncharacteristically unselfish with time, service, money and prayer.  Rather than a cloistered self-concern, they will have a concern for people who do not know Christ and a willingness to go beyond the secure peer group into the unknown of outreach.

Our desire is to help broaden a student’s perspective enough so that he or she considers outreach as a normal result of Christian obedience.  Three important objectives stated in the PCS Home and School Guide address this challenge to produce youth who are world Christians:
  • To teach the student to know and obey the will of God as revealed in Scriptures, thus equipping the student to carry out God’s will daily. (Rom. 12:1,2; II Tim. 2:15; Deut. 26:16,17)
  • To impart an understanding of each Christian’s place in the Body of Christ, and its worldwide mission, providing opportunities for the student’s involvement in this task. (Eph. 4:12; I Cor. 12:1-31; Matt. 28:19-20)
  • To teach the student how to become a contributing member of his society by realizing his need to serve others. (Gal. 5:13; Rom. 12:10)

From these objectives, come a number of important truths:

First, our students are part of the body of Christ.  They have a place in God’s plan.  It is important for us to provide them with training and experience that will enable them to consistently think about evangelism and discipleship as they seek to carry out God’s plan for their life.

Second, they have a chance to participate and contribute to the great task of evangelism.  Christian schools, while proclaiming a commitment to being salt and light, often exist in isolation from many parts of their community.  Our school’s impact on its community depends on its ability to permeate the community and bond with the local culture for the ministry of the gospel and the glory of Jesus Christ.  Preparation is not only what goes on within the walls but includes moving beyond the walls and becoming integral with the community.  By providing them with a variety of ministry options, they will contribute to this great task while gaining valuable experience for future involvement.

Third, the nature of this task demands that our students learn to follow a plan designed by God.  Part of this plan includes learning to serve others.  This involves a reorientation of priorities.  Rather than selfishness, we seek to encourage and model service.

Student Outreach exists to facilitate these objectives.

The basic purpose of Student Outreach is to encourage individual spiritual development through training and experience that will increase outreach awareness, burden, and involvement.

This purpose serves as an operational statement to guide us in the planning of activities that will strengthen personal walks with Christ so that members of the Student Outreach can be challenged and channeled toward the fulfillment of Christ’s mission on earth.
